Even though we are a diverse group at Woodside, we define ourselves simply in some respects: we are committed to working toward social justice, which is different from liking the idea of social justice. We are committed to working toward giving each child a sense of worth, beginning by leveling the playing field as much as we can. We are committed to working toward racial harmony. These are some of the ideas that bind us together in this congregation. The goals of the Outreach and Social Action Committee speak directly to these themes. Our monthly Contemporary Frontiers speakers inform us regarding issues and current topics that concern us. The monthly Continental Breakfast donations benefit local relief agencies, many of whom are suffering because of substantial United Way cutbacks. Also, we support and oversee workdays for both the Salem Housing Task Force and the North End Soup Kitchen. Needs are great here in Flint . The One Church/One School partnership with Pierce Elementary School was initiated in 1999 and was on-going. Now we are starting to get involved with the Flint Schools Mentors Committee to Excellence program. Woodside's annual scholarship campaign, raises funds which help enable local students further their education.
